Sitges – a vibrant Spanish seaside resort near Barcelona
The city of Sitges is noted for its excellent nightlife and pristine beaches. It boasts large, elegant streets, trendy hotels and historic architecture. In recent decades Sitges has attracted a large number of gay and lesbian travellers because of its wide variety of gay bars and nightclubs. The city experiences a surge in tourism during the month of August, when many families, couples and groups take their annual summer holidays.
In terms of reaching Sitges, the cheapest method of transport is taking the train from Barcelona. This costs just 3 Euros and takes just over half an hour. By car, it is free to use the C-31, however the faster C-32 involves a charge of 5 Euros. Meanwhile, the nearest international airport is El Prat de Llobregat/Barcelona, which is also accessible by a direct train service. For regional flights, the Reus/Tarragona airport can also be reached by train via Villanova i la Geltru or Sant Vicenc de Calders.
One of the major attractions of Sitges is the annual Santa Tecla Festival, which takes place during mid to late September. Celebrated for almost 800 years, the festival is regarded as a major national event and involves grand parades and spectacular firework displays. For art lovers, the Cau Ferrat house exhibits many famous paintings, including the work of Picasso and artists of the Catalan era. During the evening, many students and couples gather at the waterfront, which hosts numerous cafes. Other people wake up early to witness the Mediterranean sunrise from the sandy beach, which is one of the highlights of this stretch of coastline.
