Protect yourself from the sun this summer with these simple steps
As the days in the Northern Hemisphere continue to lengthen and the sun strengthens, it is tempting to make the most of it when the weather begins to warm up. However, as a general rule, too much of anything is a bad thing. Indeed, too much exposure to the sun during the months of April to August at peak hours can increase the risk of developing skin cancer, as well as provoking the risk of heat exhaustion or strokes in vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. This is particularly the case when exceptional heat waves occur suddenly, preventing long-term acclimatization to the high temperatures.
This is not to say that enjoying some sunshine is a bad thing. Many doctors recommend a minimum of 10 minutes’ exposure to sunlight every day (provided it isn’t overcast) in order for people to receive an adequate intake of Vitamin D. Serotonin, a hormone that promotes healthy mental functioning, is important for people who are experiencing low mood or depression and is also released during moderate or intense exercise.
Thankfully, it is possible to enjoy the sun’s rays without having to worry about developing sunburn or skin damage by using sun cream. It is widely available in many shops and ortak and for people visiting regions of the world that experience Ultraviolet levels above 10 (such as the Mediterranean, sub-tropical and tropical climate zones), it is essential to purchase sun cream that has the ‘factor 50’ label, which assures the customer that the product will provide sufficient protection for the skin in areas where the sun is particularly strong from late morning until mid afternoon.
Another step is to avoid the sunshine between the hours of 11am and 3pm (or 10am and 4pm in zones within 40 degrees latitude of the Equator). The strength of the sun an hour after sunrise or before sunset is several hundred times weaker than at 1pm, for instance.
