Dorset - the ideal summer retreat

Situated at the foot of the English south coast, Dorset is a region internationally famed for its natural beauty. Its rugged landscape comprises of one of the most unique stretches of coastline on the British Isles, known as the ’Jurassic Coast’. This exhibits one of the most spectacular examples of prehistoric fossils in the world, including notable famous sites such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. One of the most popular resorts is Bournemouth, which boasts a spectacular sandy beach that spans several miles. It has a vibrant student population and offers numerous bars and nightclubs tailored to individual tastes.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer the peace and quiet, the resort of Weymouth is low-key and is located close to the Isle of Portland, an area known for its gale force winds and gigantic waves. Weymouth is ideal for families with young children, thanks to its shallow and extremely sheltered sandy bay. It is also an ideal starting point from which to explore the local countryside and there are a number of campsites and caravan parks located nearby. Durdle Door, a large natural arch alongside a cliff, is a popular diving spot but the local council strongly advises against this activity because of the dangerous rocks that lie below the relatively shallow water. Lulworth Cove attracts around one million visitors each year and was once featured on the TV programme entitled: ’Seven Natural Wonders’, as well as the film ’Nuts in May’ by Mike Leigh (1976).

This coastline was inscribed onto the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2001 and since then it has benefited from generous funding to help preserve the natural shape of Lulworth Cove. A special Heritage Centre and a natural history museum have also been built, which have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.

In terms of transport, one of the best ways to explore the region is by hiring a car, particularly owing to the lack of rail and bus services in this relatively rural area. There are numerous options for cheap uk or cheap us car rental by researching online.
