Slovenia; the undiscovered

Most people, when thinking about destinations on the Mediterranean would think of Italy, Southern France or Spain, and for ample reason. Those countries enjoy fantastic warm weather during the spring and summer and have some pristine and beautiful beaches.
However, there are some countries that are rather unheard of and lie below the radar. One of those countries is Slovenia, I ended up there on a class trip while I was working a secondary education job. Sat between Italy and Croatia, the coast of Slovenia actually touches the Adriatic, not the Mediterranean, but the country does enjoy a Mediterranean climate during the spring and summer months and has one benefit that Italy and Spain cannot compete with; a lack of tourists.
For those looking for a relaxing getaway, Slovenia offers plenty of lush landscapes and lakes to relax by. The capital city of Ljubljana is a nice place to visit if you are looking for a bit more action during your holiday. The highlights of this small country are, as already mentioned, the capital and Lake Bled.
This fantastic lake is situated around 45 minutes outside of Ljubljana by train. You can get a coach that goes directly to the lake, or you can get off the train at Lesce/Bled and walk the two miles down to the lake. I would recommend the latter option if you love walks as the scenery you will pass is majestic.
Whilst there are some lovely landscapes to be seen, Slovenia does not compete with the likes of Switzerland for scenery, but you will find less people there, less tourism and smaller prices for food and drink. You will find great weather and very kind and helpful people as well. Beauty, peace and quiet without being too much of a strain on the wallet…what more could you ask for?
